WELCOME! This blog is dedicated to issues about the USA border and immigration (legal and illegal). While the issues have been argued for decades without resolve ...they have recently heated up again due to the influx of many young people from central and south america arriving at the USA-Mexico border especially in Texas, and then some of them being flown to California where protestors greeted them in Murrieta. Being in southern California it is all we heard about on talk radio for many days straight...and it hasn't stopped...so I am beginning this blog on July 10, 2014, and will be posting updates regarding current news reports and adding some of my own opinion to the topic given it personally effects us here in southern California not just lately but perpetually. As a Christian I feel it is my obligation (& in some regards my privilege) to extend hospitality and safety to ALL people of peace & good intention. However, I also understand some of the arguments against rashly accepting more people than we can legitimately handle as a society and a community. The Christian argument must also be balanced by rationality...we do nobody any favor if we accept so many people that we "sink the ship." It's not about space and available food and resources per se...we can always find space and more food ...and employ more people to assist in such an endeavor (ie create new jobs), but we also must be able to safely assume that such "immigrants" want to become good citizens and accept the norms of American culture. I know a lot of legal immigrants who work in 7-11's and other low-level jobs as clerks who personally do NOT like some Americans...they may have said the right things to become citizens and passed the tests, etc, but if they do NOT truly like Americans (ie those who were born, bred & lived here all their lives along with many of their ancestors) it does NOT make for good community. Thus, on one hand I want to be a "good Christian" and extend hospitality and kindness, but on the other hand I want my family, friends, & community to be safe, well-maintained, and YES, liked by newcomers. I want to be LIKED, if not loved, by people to whom I extend my hospitality and helpfulness.
It seems only fair, don't you think?
